So what makes our Anxiety Programs so unique and effective?

We address the root cause

Determining and then addressing the root cause of your anxiety symptoms allows us figure out what’s really going on in your body and mind and then correct that imbalance. This is what allows you to experience long lasting, true healing and wellness.

We use an all natural approach

Natural medicine is powerful, effective without the toxicity associated with pharmaceutical drugs and chemicals.  Decreasing your toxin load frees up more of your energy and resources for healing and transformation.  Natural medicine can also be used to reduce the side effects of your drugs.

We awaken your body's natural ability to heal

Your body was designed to self-regulate and self-heal.  Symptoms happen when this capacity gets blocked.  Healing happens when we remove these blocks and remind the body of it’s innate, natural healing ability.

We fuse ancient wisdom with modern science

Ancient wisdom honours the use of natural medicines and the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  Modern science has provided technology and specialized insight into the physical and chemical processes in the body.  This combination contributes to improved treatment outcomes.

We keep it simple

Simplicity in treatment means less confusion for your body while it heals.  It is also the way you’re going to be able to make positive lifestyle changes that are sustainable and long lasting.  Keeping it simple makes your healing journey easier and more straightforward.

Transitional care as your symptoms & mental health stabilizes

Once we see stable improvements, we will begin to reduce the frequency of visits. The goal will be to maintain the improvements we’ve achieved with more frequent, regular treatment. Initially you’ll come every week, then less frequently, then you’ll no longer need regular treatments. We’ll be here in case you ever want to come in for a tune-up or address other physical and mental health concerns. Of course, MANY of our patients do wish to continue with “ongoing maintenance” and we are happy to do that, should that be your wish.

Common Questions & Answers:

+ What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a term used to encompass a variety of symptoms that often happen in response to emotional or physical stress. Symptoms like heart racing, feelings of dread, worry, fear, a panicky feeling.

Feeling short term anxiety because of stressful situations is a normal biological response. The increase in your heart beating pumps blood to your muscles in case you need to fight or flee.

Anxiety is a problem when it becomes an anxiety disorder, a mental health condition. The severity and duration of the symptoms a person experiences, their ability to cope with everyday life situations and how debilitating these symptoms are is what differentiates short term anxiety from anxiety disorders.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with varying symptoms.

Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by chronic anxiety, excessive worry, tension and fear.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by repeated, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviours (compulsions). Repetitive behaviours like hand washing, counting, checking, or touching things are performed because if left undone, they provoke debilitating, intense anxiety that prevents the person from moving forwards.

Panic disorder is characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear and dread accompanied by physical symptoms like difficulty breathing, chest pain, heart palpitations/racing heart, dizziness, digestive distress.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing a terrifying event or ordeal where major physical or emotional harm was threatened or occurred. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent assault, natural disasters, large scale attacks instigated by humans, war, or accidents, and the witnessing of these types of events.

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by overwhelming and excessive feelings of fear and self-consciousness in everyday social situations. Often people will feel that others are judging or making fun of them. Social anxiety can be limited to only one type of social situation; such as public speaking or meetings. It can also be so broad that it prevents a person from engaging in any social gatherings.

Phobias are characterized by intense fear of a particular situation, animal, insect or object.

+ What causes anxiety?

Anxiety is a nervous system response to stressful and dangerous situations. The situation causes the brain and hormonal system to begin to release certain chemicals and hormones that lead to the symptoms described above. Under normal circumstances, once the stress or danger is gone, the nervous and hormonal systems return to their calm resting state and the symptoms stop.

Anxiety disorder occurs when the nervous and hormonal system stay stuck in a loop of releasing the chemicals and hormones without returning to rest, causing the symptoms to continue for long periods of time or to keep coming back.

+ What does an anxiety attack or panic attack feel like?

Anxiety and panic attacks can feel terrifying and debilitating, as though the person suffering them is in imminent and grave danger. There can be both physical and emotional symptoms such as heart racing, palpitations, difficulty breathing, hyperventilating, sweating, crying, numbness or pain, fear, paranoia, intense worry and tension.

+ Are anti-anxiety medications the only treatment?

No anti-anxiety medication is not the only treatment. There are many other approaches to take and are tailored to specific diagnosis and type of symptoms.

Effective options include acupuncture, herbal medicine, Chinese medicine, lifestyle changes, mind-body techniques like breath work, meditation, mindfulness, and psychotherapy like cognitive behavioural therapy.

Often a combination of treatment approaches is what works best and offers the most relief. Reducing anxiety symptoms with treatment and then strengthening coping skills can help to retrain the brain and nervous system to make anxiety much more manageable.

+ What is stress?

Stress is any situation that causes the nervous system to respond go into fight or flight mode. It can be a real, dangerous situation or one’s response to situations, interactions and can be unsettling or upsetting.

One of the measures of good health is how well a persons can respond to the stressful situation, make a decision, choose and choose the appropriate behaviour in response to that stress, the return to a calm, balanced state.

The inability to return to calm is not good for our health because our bodies are not designed to cope with longterm, chronic, ongoing stress. When you experience this type of stress, it can disrupt your hormonal, immune and cardiovascular systems.

+ How does Chinese medicine help with anxiety?

Chinese medicine is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of different treatment types which include acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, breath work, meditation, body work and qi gong (a meditative movement practice similar to tai chi). The goal in Chinese medicine is to figure out what the root cause of a symptom is and then work on correcting it by helping the body to heal and recover.

Chinese medicine can help with anxiety by determining what root underlying imbalances are contributing to the anxiety symptoms and allowing the body to return to balance.

+ How does acupuncture help with anxiety?

Acupuncture helps with anxiety by calming the nervous system, getting the body out of fight or flight, reducing tension, worry and fear, creating a sense of calm and peace.

Regular acupuncture treatments can help people suffering with anxiety to better cope with the overwhelming symptoms of anxiety, making them much more manageable.

+ How does herbal medicine help with anxiety?

Herbal medicine helps with anxiety by helping to support things like better quality sleep, more energy, strong and healthy digestion. These things are fundamental to optimal healing and a calm and balanced nervous system.
